چکیده

Fetal cells can be isolated using several enrichment methods, however, since no technique to specifically isolate and use them for genetic diagnosis has reached clinical practice, prenatal diagnosis currently requires invasive procedures. A micromachined device to fractionate whole blood using physical means to enrich for and/or isolate rare cell types from peripheral circulation was designed. It has arrays of four successively narrower channels, each consisting of a 2-D array of columns. Current devices have channels ranging in width from 15μm-2.5μm, and are 5μm deep. Fetal nucleated red blood cells were isolated from cord blood reproducibly and molecular analysis confirmed their origin without contamination from maternal DNA. Future studies will provide methods to detect fetal cells from maternal circulation using a non-invasive approach, the risk for fetal loss will be eliminated, and test costs will be decreased.

Biocompatible coatings for CMUTs in a harsh, aqueous environment

The results of coating capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) arrays with two different biocompatible materials, parylene-c and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), are reported. These materials were characterized for use with CMUTs to enable direct contact transcutaneous and in vivo imaging. A passivation coating is required to provide electrical isolation to the active areas of the dev...

In the last two decades, there has been an increasing interest in structural engineering control methods. Shape memory alloys and seismic isolation systems are examples of passive control systems that use of any one alone, effectively improve the seismic performance of the structure. Characteristics such as large strain range without any residual deformation, high damping capacity, excellent re...

O-45: Quantification of Cell-Free-Fetal-DNAfrom Maternal Plasma for the First Time in Pakistan:Implications for Non-Invasive PrenatalDiagnosis of Genetic Disorders

Background: Current prenatal diagnosis requires invasive testing which carries a 1-4% procedure-related-risk of miscarriage; hence, non-invasive techniques are desired. The recent demonstration of cell-free-fetal-DNA enriched from maternal plasma has opened new possibilities for non-invasive-prenatal-diagnosis of not only genetic-disorders such as β-thalassaemia and haemophilia but also chromos...
